The 1st Global Garbage Conclave and Awards, 2014 with the theme Garbage to Wealth: New Dimensions in Waste Management was organized by Better India Foundation (BIF), at Jacaranda hall, India Habitat Centre, Lodi Road, New Delhi, on the 22nd of March, 2014.
BIF is an Institution, with a mission to empower and unleash India’s Potential. Founded by an alchemist, thinker and media evangelist –Santosh Goenka and inspired by Ramnath Goenka, the founder of the Indian Express Group. The foundation has chosen the area of Waste Management as one of its key initiatives to promote and evangelize a Better India. The event was managed by Engineering Watch, a speciality niche media focused on engineering.
The Global Garbage Conclave and awards (GGCA 2014) provided an unbiased, collaborative media and networking platform for the stakeholders of this vital sector comprising of waste management companies, government, urban planners and administrators, technology partners, vendors and service providers, logistic companies, financiers and bankers, knowledge partners and consultants to arrive at a submission that substantiates the theme.The vision of the conclave was to bring all thought-leaders in this space together, understand their view points and work in consonance to bring out the best to transform the entire area of Garbage, in order to save the environment and create wealth.
The theme of the event was set by Mr. Santosh Goenka, BIF, by stating the need of such a conclave.He affirmed that BIF will play the role of an enabler organization, a custodian of the wealth of learning and wisdom for the community; an advocate of the sector at the grass root level using the power of the regional press and specialized media. Mr. G S Dutt, Rtd. IAS officer, delivered the Keynote Address highlighting the urgent need of all diverse stakeholders of the garbage community to come together on a common platform to find actionable solutions.
The Chief Guest, Mr. Shashi Shekhar, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India highlighted the role of his ministry in the area of environmental impact of Waste Management. He also emphasized on the role of Business model in value creation for all efforts in waste management.
A theme paper on “Waste Management in India: Challenges, Emerging Trends & Opportunities” was released by Mr. Asok Mookerjee of ASquareH Financial Consultants in presence of Mr. Shashi Shekhar,Mr. G S Dutt and Mr. S. Goenka.
Four plenary sessions were held with distinguished panels on themes of:
1. Present Scenario of Waste management in India & Experiences So Far
2. New Approach to Waste Management to India
3. Problem of E-Waste & Role of Waste Logistics
4. Roles of rag-pickers in Waste Management in India & “Gazing the Crystal Ball”
A Life Time Achievement Award was conferred upon Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, a sociologist, social activist and Founder of Sulabh Sanitation and Social Reform Movement. Awards were also given to Municipal commissioners for their contribution to improvement in waste management from Katni, Shimla, Jaipur, Bikaner, Phagwara, Jabalpur and Bhopal cities.
