At a tete-a-tete, Soni answered to CSRV queries. Excerpts : Why do you like CSR and Sustainability as a career? By sustainability generally we relate to upkeep of the natural resources. Humans are keenly related to Nature, as much as are human issues which affect sustainability of life forces. I have worked for social development issues including child rights, gender equity, community, corporate social responsibility and aid efficiency, which also involved sustainable handling of natural habitats and related problems. Why do you think a career in CSR and Sustainability is different from others? A career in CSR and Sustainability is more rooted to basic issues which determine the course of business processes and growth. It is humans who are in the bottom of every consideration, therefore CSR and Sustainability are two determinants for success in business. That is why a career in CSR and Sustainability is different from one in other areas of core business. I have worked extensively on issues relevant to gender, women's economic empowerment, and inclusiveness. My recent engagements have been for conducting a Program Evaluation of UNWOMEN Regional SAARC Gender Info Base (SGIB) Programme, which is a South Asian repository of qualitative and quantitative information to monitor progress on women's empowerment and gender equality. I have been the Global Team Leader for the Gender Baseline Data Collection Project with the International Finance Corporation's 'Women in Business Program'. This programme seeks to establish a baseline estimate of women-owned SMEs access to finance and assess the credit gap for women-entrepreneurs across 32 countries. Whom do you respect the most as a corporate leader? I have not thought in this line as yet. Maybe I shall develop an idea soon. There are many brilliant corporate leaders in the country who needs to be mentioned, but I have not yet identified anybody to put before all others. Which Indian corporate house do you think carries out the best CSR practices in business management? Again I have not evaluated any in this respect as yet. Maybe next time when we meet and if you ask, I would be able to tell you exactly whom I value most over others. How do you differentiate an HR manager from a CSR manager To my mind these two areas should be coordinating to each other, recruitment must be reciprocal to social responsibility.
